The characters you encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3 each have their own individual idiosyncrasies and aspirations. One such example is found with Gale, who struggles with an unfortunate circumstance that compels him to consume enchanted objects against his will. Our guide delves into the companion mission associated with Gale and the Wizard of Waterdeep within Baldur’s Gate 3; however, kindly note this informative article does reveal spoilers.
Recruiting Gale: Initiating the Quest
In order to accomplish the Wizard of Waterdeep – Gale Companion Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3, there are a few steps you must follow. To start off, recruit Gale shortly after departing from the Nautiloid crash site. Throughout your journey, aim to bolster his respect for you by taking actions and providing responses that prove beneficial towards innocent individuals such as Tiefling refugees.
Guide on Dealing with Gale’s Ailment: A Delicate Balance
At some point, Gale will disclose his state. He had previously entered into a romantic relationship with the deity Mystra and arrogantly unleashed explosive magical powers which then compelled him to keep this Weave enclosed in his chest.
As a result of the immense energy demanded, he must continue to take in magical items with supplementary abilities and benefits. These include those beyond simply enhanced weaponry and armor labeled with a +1. When Gale requires sustenance, an exclamation point materializes above his head.
To cure his malady temporarily, have a conversation with Gale and give him the magical item you no longer require. Alternatively, Persuasion checks can be used during dialogue but note that this may negatively impact his Constitution rolls due to his severe need.
Gale’s condition will worsen after receiving three magical items from you. At this point, he’ll request an immediate discussion with you regarding how his symptoms are escalating beyond control despite your assistance in providing gear pieces thus far (based on our campaign experience).
Encountering Elminster: Unraveling the Truth
To progress the Gale companion quest in Baldur’s Gate 3, one must next encounter his mentor, Elminster. It is currently uncertain where he can be found; however, we personally encountered him north of the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. Below are some important details to keep in mind:
- To reach Moonrise Towers, one must traverse the Rosymorn Monastery Trail that forms a part of an overland path. To get to this trail, two possible routes can be taken – either taking the exit beside Goblin Camp or crossing the stone bridge in Mountain Pass.
- Upon reaching Rosymorn Monastery Trail, follow its winding path towards northwest and pass by undead creatures until you come across a cliffside area which connects with Shadow-Cursed Lands further. Elminster awaits on your way where he will divulge Gale’s true purpose upon engaging him at your campsite.
Unveiling the True Purpose: A Twist in the Quest
Elminster discloses that The Weave embedded within Gale’s chest has potential for destroying The Heart of Absolute thereby altering mission objectives altogether.
Gale no longer requires any magical items as Elminster has temporarily cured him of his ailment. However, be cautious when using Gale’s new Netherese Orb Blast ability as it triggers a dramatic cutscene where he stabs himself before causing an explosive blast that can wipe out entire areas. This will result in the game ending even if you try fast travelling to another location alone.
In Act 2’s final battle with Ketheric Thorm at the Mind Flayer Colony, Gale suggests destroying Absolute by blowing it up for good measure; this may lead to a sudden end-of-campaign scene followed by credits rolling on your screen (though reloading saves is possible).
That said, there might still be alternative solutions available should your character convince him otherwise regarding these risky plans – stay tuned for more updates about Baldur’s Gate III Companion Quests featuring Waterdeep Wizard Gale.
